Duergar
I'm thinking about using the Gates of Firestorm Peak Adventure (AD&D 2nd Ed.) for my current C&C campaign. But transfering seems untypical complicated because of the focus on Duergar in the first halve of the adventure.
Why is it that Duergar in C&C are so different to the ones in D&D and many of it's derivates. How should I compensate the missing enlage power to keep the difficulty high? Any suggestions?
Duergar have never had a self enlarge power. I think you are mistaking them for Spriggans which did the enlarging into small giants.
Ofcourse they had. Take a look here: https://rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/90335/where-does-the-duergars-gr...
The following is a quote from the 2nd edition Monster Manual (2): "All duergar possess innate magical abilities of enlargement and invisibility. They can use these spells as wizards of a level equal to their hit points. Duergar can use enlargement to either grow or shrink themselves-"
The power is explicitly mentioned and explained in the adventure I am referring to above. It is still there in the 5th edition MC.
I'd have to ask Serl, but from what I understand they adhere more to actual myth than D&D stats. Duergar from the myth never had a growth power and logically, being dwarves living deep underground in tunnels having a growth power is rather stupid since it could only be used in open cave areas of sufficient size. Been playing D&D for over 40 years and have never even noticed that growth power bit nor used it. (shrug) Not to say you can't adapt it over for your own game as you want though. C&C is flexible that way.
Sure is. But following a more mythical view like you do I don't think the growth power really fits.
So my question to you fellow knights is: how to compensate with an ability that is equally powerfull without feeling so weird out of place for dwarves.
You could do something based on the Earth element. Such as creating earth dolls / duplicates of themselves once per day or what. Instant force doubling. Or shockwave type short-medium range ground attack...Or even use shadow clones since they are evil lil buggers...Or even stone walk type power. They meld into the wall then suddenly come out behind the PCs to attack...imagination is the limit.
Or turn into earth or stone a mini-elemental.. need magic to hit too?
