Playing at the Table
How do you play Castles and Crusades at the table?
1 - Complete theater of the mind.
2 - Theater of the mind and occasionally putting some dice down to show where you're at.
3 - Using the best method as it makes warranted. A fair combination of both.
4 - Vast majority of encounters take place on the battle mat, markers, miniatures, etc.
5 - The level of "All Out". There's miniatures, terrain, trees, DwarvenForge, a flat screen monitor, a projector, etc.
Generally with my Tac-tiles and miniatures. No room for storing terrain and all that.
I used to run and play 2nd ed.with theatre of the mind. I would draw a big map out on a sheet of art paper. With that and a laptop for NPC generation (i think it was heroes.exe) I was able to prep in about two hours prior to the game.
30 some odd years later I'm using minis and a wet-erase battlemat from chessex. And I use modules more often. We're playing Blacktooth Ridge from TLG right now. I actually really enjoy painting miniatures when I have the time.
I fully agree with the “when I have time”
