movement rates
The PHB says a character can move up to one half his movement rate and still attack in the same round. Does that take into account running? If so, a character with a 30' movement rate could move (30 X 4) / 2 or 60' and still attack, which seems reasonable to me. In fact, why would anyone not run when closing to combat? Is there any downside? (Charging, of course, is a special case that comes with its own limitations.)
In combat, players can move at half their movement rate and still attack in the same round. They can run, but can't attack and may be subject to attacks of opportunity if they run past or away from an enemy. In order to run and attack they need to "charge" in a straight line to the enemy. From experience I would recommend that the battle mat not restrict your players to straight lines along it like a chess board. In other words a straight line can be "outside the box". Hope that helps.
That makes sense. If they're running, their entire action for the round is "close to melee range".
This has been one of those rules that I have ignored forever and a day. :) Allowed full normal movement and attack but not run and attack (unless it is a charge as noted). Maybe that is heresy but it keeps it simpler to figure out for me.
I agree with you GP. That's how I usually handle it.
