characters per 10' square
What do the rules say about characters per square? I see mention of combat maneuvers like flank attack (left rear/right rear), but how many characters can occupy a 10' square during combat? During exploration? The simplest thing, since I use 10' squares on a battle mat, is one character per square, but I'd like to know what's official.
Character takes up one 5'x5' square for medium and small size. Large takes a 10'x10' square. Effective fighting area for a med. or sm size character is a 10' sq while large is a 20' sq. This encompasses moving around, weapon reach (barring polearms and the like), and the PC themselves.
That has always been my understanding of things since the days of 1st ed AD&D and seems to have carried over consistently to the best of my knowledge.
But my question was, what do the C&C rules say?
At least two or three characters should be able to occupy a 10' square. It depends on how large they are. If the party were four gnomes, then they could probably all fit in there. When I use my battle mat at a game, I usually distinguish each square as a 5' square.
If there's something in the book on the contrary, I would go with that. But, the minute details are sometimes left to the Castle Keeper. The Castle Keeper's guide is very handy for getting deeper into the rules and different options that you can use in your game. My house rules are in the Knights Downloads if you want to see what ones I use.
Yeah, one character per 5' square is what we were using in AD&D 1e. I just don't want to make any assumptions about C&C because one of its biggest appeals is that it's playable out-of-box without house-ruling it to death like 1e. I really like the clarity of the manuals.
It would depend on what you expected the PC to do in the space. Four normal sized humans can fit on a 5'x5' sidewalk flag even wearing armor, but they cannot do much more than stand in that space. Even two people are limited to movement without tripping over each other, forget about fighting effectively unless it is interlocked shields and pikes forward to advance. I answered based on functional utilization of the space, not so much per rules. In all honesty, even expecting a normal person to be able to fight effectively in less than a 10' square space is pushing it without hacking up friendlies nearby or tripping over them as they move.
One per 5' square is pretty much the standard. Generally speaking I would just go with that.
One inch is five feet. Each figure is about 1 inch tall. Each figure fits nicely in one square inch.. minis make it happen without thought.
