Hello everyone... brand new here. I've been running games in AD&D 1st and 3rd edition FOREVER! When 4th edition came out I declared war on the "Wizards of the Coast" and believe it or not, quit playing for a while. Long story short, I just ran my first game in C&C and it was fantastic! Love it, love it, love it! More importantly, my group thoroughly enjoyed the ease of play!
With all that in mind, I have a life-altering change coming which requires moving away from the group I've played with for years. The bad news is they have no interest in playing virtually (they've always been a pain when it comes to change). Since everything else is changing, I figured why not just change it all and find a new group who wants to play virtually. The only problem is I don't know which VTT is the best. At the moment I am leaning toward Roll20 but I wanted to get some input from you guys.
Thoughts?
Roll20 is easier to use but lacks C&C support still and is still expanding their features. Fantasy Grounds has a higher learning curve, develop(ing) C&C support, and more bells and whistles as well as capabiltiy for off server play. That's about as much as I can tell you.
Thanks for the quick response. I'll check it out.
I have used Fantasy Grounds for almost 6 years. C&C is my favourite ruleset for it. C&C is well worth the price and makes running online C&C games a breeze. If you want a quick tour, hit me up with a PM and we can figure something out (perhaps even have you observe an actual game in session).
Thanks, John. I'm in the finishing stages of designing my next campaign. When I finish I'll circle back around and hit you up for that quick tour. Fantasy Grounds definitely seems like the way to go.
Glad all is well on your vitural front, good luck on all new adventures. Still paper and pencil here, but you got to change, you change. Best of luck and have fun!
I run a C&C game on Roll20 and other than a character sheet there is nothing really there, but it is easy and I find it has a very retro feel. We use Discord for voice. So long as you have your books open life is sweet, but then the game is simple so really even they are not used often.
I do have the free FG and while it is clearly more feature rich and has much built in it certainly seems more complicated to use. I haven't played a game with it and I suspect joining a game, or even watching one, will ease the learning curve.
At the end of the day it comes donw to preference and your style. Whichever you choose just make sure you have fun!
I am curious to know which system you ended up deciding to use.
I do hope that we see a C&C compendium added to Roll20 at some point in the future. Fantasy Grounds seems cool but I do believe there are Millions of users on Roll20, compared to the Thousands of users on Fantasy Grounds. I don't forsee that changing anytime soon. Roll20 is where the most players are to be found.
Like others, I am using the Character Sheets in Roll20 and then have my books open... but the game play could be significantly better if there was a compendium available.
